Sundar Shadi Holiday Display
From 1949 until his retirement in 1996,
Sundar Shadi brightened everyone's Christmas with the elaborate Nativity displays he set up on his sprawling hillside yard on the Arlington.
For many people, Shadi WAS Christmas. He was a real life Santa Claus who gave his neighbors something more precious than toys - he gave us the true spirit of the holidays.
The work he went through every year was his gift to us.
An Annual Tradition
Thanks to the Shadi family's generous donation of Mr. Shadi's unique and well-loved figures to Soroptimist International of El Cerrito and the El Cerrito Community Foundation, we can see this holiday display once again.
It will be shown this year (2014) for 13 evenings, leading up to and including Christmas. (Saturday, December 13 thru Friday, December 26). The display is located approximately one mile east of San Pablo Ave, on Moeser Lane in El Cerrito. See the map on the "location" page
If hanging lights and dragging a tree into your house isn't something you look forward to, or even do, start a new tradition ! The volunteers at the Shadi display are an energetic and enthusiastic group. It is a wonderful way to generate a feeling of good will while spreading the holiday cheer.
